Three Minnesota hooks were to have determined the open-fuel champion, but it wound up being settled over two nights in Anoka. Blechinger got off to the fast start with the Thursday night win, while Ken Witt’s “Mr. Yuk” came in third behind the “Diggin’ Fever” of Esdon Lehn. Guy’s Case IH and Ken’s John Deere traded places the next night, with Witt second to Lehn and Blechinger fourth to knot the score at 59. Despite its pair of sixths, Jon Miller’s “Another Bad Habit” was in the mix heading into Owatonna. But for the second straight year, it was over in soggy Steele County before it began, and that meant that Blechinger’s victory would break the tie in his favor.
The “Rocket” never soared the highest across four hooks in Wisconsin, but it stayed airborne the longest to capture Lynn’s first title in five years over a colorful group of competitors. Seven weeks after the Degenhardts’ “Diggin’ Hard” claimed the opener in Ellsworth, the Spiegelbergs’ “Detonator Black” went off in Menomonie. But these two tractors placed eighth when they didn’t win, so Lynn’s fourth and third put him in the lead. In Marshfield, “Black” took second to tie the third-place “Rocket” and set up a one-hook showdown in Ridgeland. There, Bryce Pichler’s “Red Thunder” claimed victory with Lynn’s runner-up finish being sufficient to clinch the title by a single point.
